Welcome to Mr. Pennington's Class!

About Me:

Hello! My name is Mr. Pennington and I am the Orchestra, Guitar and Choir teacher here at Combs! I am originally from the Northern Kentucky/Cincinnati area. I moved to Arizona three years ago with my wife Lindsay to begin my teaching career in the Combs community. We reside in San Tan Valley with our four pets. We have two dogs, Copper and Penny, and two cats, Libra and Ditto.

Educational Background: 2014 Graduate of Western Kentucky University, Summa Cum Laude, Bachelors of Music Education with an Emphasis in Violin and Voice

Educational Experience: 2014-2015 Long Term Music Substitute, multiple schools
2015-2017 General Music/Orchestra/Guitar at Ranch Elementary and Combs High School
2017-Present Orchestra/Guitar/Choir at Combs High School

I have been teaching at Combs for the past three years (since my move) and before that I worked in two smaller districts in KY as a long term music substitute. This is my second year as a full-time teacher at Combs High School, my first two years at in the district were spent as a traveling teacher between Ranch Elementary and Combs High.

Educational Philosophy: I believe that music does not require "talent" and that every child can have a successful musical experience in my class.

Welcome to the Combs High Fine Arts community. Combs High has a tradition of excellence in Fine Arts, with award winning programs and we are excited to welcome you to our performing groups. I currently teach two sections of guitar, one section of choir, and two sections of orchestra. Here is a little bit of information about each ensemble:

Beginning Guitar- This class is designed for students who have little to no experience on an instrument and are interested in learning the guitar. Both guitar classes focus on performing mostly classical style guitar, but in this class a nylon classical guitar is not required to participate. Students who join this class need little to no experience reading music, as this is a skill that is developed throughout the course.

Advanced Guitar- This class is designed for students who have already taken the prerequisite Beginning Guitar class or have previous experience on another instrument and/or are proficient at reading music. This class is primarily for upperclassmen but can be joined by any student regardless of grade with teacher approval. This class focuses on classical style guitar, with an emphasis on guitar ensemble performance. Students in this class participate in the quarterly Guitar/Choir concert and also perform for each other throughout the year. There is an emphasis on advanced techniques and advanced note reading skills. Continuing students also have the ability to apply for a student leadership role as an officer and contribute their voice to class decisions.

Choir- This is a mixed ability class of students from all grades 9-12 that love to sing! There is an emphasis on correct singing technique, sight-reading, and performance as an ensemble. Solo opportunities are given throughout, typically at least one for each concert. This class performs regularly throughout the year at Governing Board meetings, student assemblies, fundraisers, quarterly concerts, and other additional performance opportunities. Continuing students also have the ability to apply for a student leadership role as an officer and contribute their voice to class decisions.

Concert Orchestra- This class is designed for underclassmen who play violin, viola, cello or bass. There is an emphasis on fundamentals and correct technique. This class has many performance opportunities as it travels several times during the school year to festivals in addition to the quarterly performances. During the 2017-18 year, students from the Concert and Chamber Orchestra participated in the Disney Performing Arts Onstage program and an accompanying workshop at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, CA. Continuing students also have the ability to apply for a student leadership role as an officer and contribute their voice to class decisions.

Chamber Orchestra- This class is designed for advanced players who play violin, viola, cello or bass. There is an emphasis on advanced technique and group performance. This class has many performance opportunities as it travels several times during the school year to festivals in addition to quarterly performances.
