Coyote Weekly Update 11/17/17

November 17, 2017

Thanksgiving week information:

  • We will have school on MondayTuesday and Wednesday, November 20, 21 and 22. We will have “regular school days” with no special schedule.
  • We will be off for the Thanksgiving break of Thursday and Friday November 23 and 24.
  • Back to school on Monday, November 27.

For all parents/guardians and students:

  • Combs High School is in beginning stages of organizing an Alumni Association and we are looking for graduates and staff to participate in this exciting process. If you are interested in learning more, please contact—Brooke Davis, Principal at:  bdavis@jocombs.org
  • Combs High School has an opportunity to partner with MIKID, an organization focused on improving the behavioral health and welcome of children and youth.  Every high school student and staff will participate in an hour-long presentation in their math class about the Signs of Suicide Prevention Program (SOS).  The training will focus on increasing the knowledge and awareness of depression and suicide as well as strategies to acknowledge what friends or self is feeling, showing care to others and telling an adult so that support may be provided.  The training will take place at the high school in November.
  • As we move towards final exams in the next weeks, I have attached an article about studying for you to read and review with your student.  This article from How We Learn by Benedict Carey, has insights into what is needed for students to have the best advantages for learning. The article is attached for your review.

J.O. Combs Unified Schools:

  • Thanksgiving is right around the corner and our J.O. Combs Food Bank needs your help. Please see the attached flyer for more information.
  • Join the Combs High School Boosters and Harmon Elementary for the 10th Annual Turkey Waddle on Thanksgiving morning.  This year's beneficiaries are Eli Terrazas and Mary Ann Canella.  Eli has a cancer-causing genetic disorder and is in 8th grade at Combs Middle School.  His bone marrow transplant happened in May, and he is currently home recovering.  Longtime district employee Mary Ann Cannella was diagnosed with brain cancer in December.  She continues to improve and her latest MRI showed great progress.  Please visitcombsturkeywaddle.com. for more information.
